Overview
Headway Oxfordshire has a variety of well established and high
quality support services for those with acquired brain
injury (including stroke and some other neurological
conditions) and their families and carers. Our services are
designed to support the formal rehabilitation provided by health
professionals whilst increasing the independence of the individual
and alleviating the pressure placed upon carers and family
members.
We also aim to heighten awareness of acquired brain injury and the
associated issues of long term neurological conditions within the
professional sphere and the community at large. This is achieved
through the variety of educational events and training programs
that we offer.
Centre Services
We have an activity and rehab centre located centrally in
Kennington, Oxford. Through our centre, service users have
access to a range of activities and services that compliment their
formal rehabilitation. We encourage socialisation and peer support
with the aim of reducing anxiety and increasing confidence. Service
users can share their experiences in an environment of
understanding, with an emphasis on fun. Structured individual
programs enable clients to access any or all services and therapies
which may include:
- Physiotherapy
- Speech and Language Therapy
- Memory Workshops
- Brain Gym
- Yoga Therapy
- Tai Chi
- Specialist Computer Software
- Access to Computer Suite
- Art as Therapy
- Music as Therapy
- Digital Music Workshops

Community Support
(A BIG Lottery Project)
Our Community Workers can support individuals with ABI
(including stroke and some other neurological conditions) across
the county of Oxfordshire from early diagnosis and throughout the
various stages of rehabilitation. This also includes support for
carers, families and other professionals as necessary.
They can meet the individual and / or their carers in a hospital
setting, in a public place (such as cafes) or can make home visits.
They will listen to what support you are looking for and react to
those needs. We can provide support in a number of areas
including:
• Information; such as publications produced by
Headway
• Information on Headway services
• Signposting to other organisations for specialist support;
such as benefits
• To participate in activities; such as joining a gym or art
group
• Helping people back to employment (Voluntary or Paid)
• Liaise between you and Health Care professional / Social
Workers
• And much much more………………………….

Vocational Support
Headway Oxfordshire's Vocational Worker is available to offer
support to individuals with an acquired brain injury when they
reach a point in their rehabilitation where they feel ready to
return to the workplace, be it paid or voluntary, or are interested
in accessing education or training.
All new service users are offered an initial meeting to identify
appropriate services. This can take place in the community or at
our Headway Oxfordshire centre. Once needs are identified, the
vocational worker will draw up an enablement plan with the service
user to help set achievable goals.
The Vocational worker is able to work with an individual to
help:
- Identify skills
- Write a CV
- Write covering letters for applications
- Search and apply for paid employment or volunteering posts
- Liaise with employers
- Continue to offer support once back in the workplace (both paid
and voluntary)
- Provide links to local colleges and volunteer bureaus
- Offer basic computer training
- Signpost to other services that may be of assistance
Headway Oxfordshire will also shortly be offering a 'Back to
Work' training programme. For more information please contact
us.

Transport Service
Transport is one of the biggest challenges for our services
users. It is difficult to find, expensive to use and as from
April 2011, very unlikely to be funded as part of a care
package. Headway Oxfordshire recognise this problem and have now
invested in a Welfare Ambulance. We are now able to offer a
transport service to our service users, at a subsidised rate. We
hope that this will mean that those who would have previously been
unable to attend our services, will now be able to do so.
Headway Oxfordshire Ambulance
Our Ambulance is able to accomodate up to four wheelchairs at
any one time, or up to 9 passegers or a combination of both. If you
would like more information on our transport service, please
contact us on 01865 326263.
